I have soooo enjoyed reading the comments from last week and seeing how everyone is doing such wonderful and different projects--very inspiring!! Here is a look at the prize for next week's randomly chosen blog commenter...it is one of the new calendars for 2010 that Stampington has put out...a little bit of inspiration for each month!! Its title is Somerset Life, not Somerset Lite.

The winner for last week's entries has been announced in the newsletter...go there to see if maybe it was you...Here is the Question for this week (also, I opened up the comments area for "anonymous" repliers...but I would be delighted if you would let me know who you are.!! Anyway...the Question:
What do you think are some good ways to embellish a bird cage..any size...This is really a fantasy project...just share your thoughts. Here are some of mine...I would definitely add some of those long Prima floral stems along the corners, with some extra velvet leaves thrown in...maybe I would make a few felt birds to hang on wire perches inside...and possibly a nest of some sort, maybe out of a combo of wire and twigs..will have to give this more thought, and who knows, after I hear from all of you, maI will actually make one!

  1. My first thought was to do something with the words "I know why the caged bird sings" from Maya Angelou, embellishing the cage with musical notes, making a nest from recycled sheet music, altering a feather bird with mica glitter and gemstones on a ribbon-wrapped perch, weaving words handwritten and/or stamped through the cage bars...now if I could just find that perfect old birdcage on a wire floor stand, I think I have an idea I could run with. 2. My mind immediately ran to wire and beads...I am thinking stringing different shapes and sizes and textures of beads on different gauges of wire and weaving it in an out of the cage. I would fill in areas with twigs painted in metallic colors, feathers spritzed with Glimmer Mist, paper flowers, etc. Inside would be a large nest filled handmade embellished nest and I would use this to display minibooks that I have made!

  3. Why not think outside the birdcage? Angels or butterflies both inside and out, with assorted ribbons and flowers weaving around the cage. Both can be seen entering the cage for whatever is attracting them inside...we will have to use our imagination for that!!!

  4. I'd love to see a bird cage with every one of the cage bars painted a different color..As many colors as you have paints. A small amount of glitter in a few random spots would be an added touch and then a few embellishments that would identify it as ready for one or another season (christmas, Easter, Autumn, etc.) of the year. 5. I would make a paperdoll of a 40's pinup girl and have her sitting on the "swing" inside, and then in the bottom of the cage I would put a pile of holiday candy (appropriate to whatever the season)...i.e. candy corn, jelly beans, red-n-white mints, dum-dums, holiday kisses....From the top of the cage I would make a cascading dangle-tangle of multicolored ribbons with very Bling-ey (is that a word?) beads, stars sparkly with vintage-look glass glitter, and pom-poms, (especially the ones with glittery ends). I would leave the cage door open and display it near the coffee table or by the front door so that people could grab some candy from the little "cage dancer"....LOL.

  6. You have some great bird nests in the store that would look great in a birdcage....along with some eggs, twigs, small flowers and maybe a butterfly.

  8. First I would hang fringe & bead trim along the bottom. I then would create a cat to hang on to the bottom with a sheepish grin and feathers. I would also have a trail of Ivy on the cage where the bird could hide from the cat.

I'm not sure why but as soon as I read Bird cage Sylvester & Tweetie came to mind.

  9. I am imagining a shabby chic look. I would paint the birdcage white and distress it. I would add lots of beautiful ribbons streaming down the sides of the cage with a vintage bird to sit on the perch !!!!

  10. If I had a wire bird cage to decorate, I would either make, or find a realistic stuffed Cat to put inside of the cage, and then have some of those felt birds on the outside of the cage, and put some thin wire on some of the birds to make it look like they are flying around the outside of the cage.
I would decorate the cage with alot of prima flowers, and maybe make it look like a vine is growing around the cage. Make it look like a garden almost.
I would definatly add glitter to the wires of the cage, to make it really pop!
Maybe for the bottom of the cage, (on the outside) I would add some ribbon with those little puff balls hanging off of it. Or some long strands of beads, to have hang down under the cage, that would look really pretty.

  11. My first thought is victorian... but to kick it up. I would glitter all the wire in the frame. I would wrap some kind of velvet leaves and jeweled berries around some of the frame. Inside I would put 1 incredible looking bird and decorate some more. At the top where it hangs a velvet bow with sprays and feathers would finish it off.

  12. I think I would love a white cage....and everything accented in white....the boy bird, with beautiful silver glitter on his tail...the girl bird :) with pearls around her neck and rhinestones on her tail....feathers, with some of the rock candy stickles on them,& at the top of the cage, some beautiful bright white roses....The little perch they sit on: silver glittered. I would hang heidi swapp's crystals from the bottom of the cage. oooh, it would be purdy! :) Teri W.

  14. All white with snowflakes and glitter and feathers to make it castle like...in the snow...with white doves or owls... so when you open up the door, it's like a magical wonderland. Cricut some princess stuff, add tim holz, maybe some glass pieces with crystals.. and don't forget the little lights to illuminate it.
